For the priests to kill Paul in the name of their holy Muad’Dib is evidence of the hypocrisy which has become all pervasive and poisons the empire. He essentially tells everyone it is a sham. So in CoD as the preacher he proclaims to the masses all that is wrong with the religion. What was created around Paul around Maid’ Dib is the antithesis of who he is as a person. These priests are drunk on their own self righteousness. To say anything against the religion is to break the law. Church and State are now one so these priests have the final say. People want their own personal forms of power. In Messiah we see how bureaucracy takes hold and the old ways fall into place. You WANT to follow him! He did everything right in Dune for all the right reasons. Paul is the leader you wish you could follow. I think Frank’s idea that power attracts the corruptible is so evident. He was stabbed to death by the very priests who are preaching his holy name. I think Paul’s true death was really symbolic of just how far the religion had gotten out of control.
